VSA arts Institute: What We Offer

Institute participants comparing notes

Arrive with high aspirations and lots of questions. Leave with an action plan for ways to implement the new ideas at home the very next day.

VSA arts Institute is to enhance the ability of practitioners to integrate the arts into education to address the needs of people with disabilities. The VSA arts Institute offers hands-on, arts-infused activities and provides opportunities for attendees to dialogue and reflect upon their own learning. As part of its unique learning environment, VSA arts designed a series of core sessions to be complemented and expounded upon in workshops, and finally, to be talked over and reflected upon in small, interactive study groups.

The VSA arts Institute explores five key elements in arts, learning, and disabilities:

  • Inclusive practice and universal design for learning
  • Developmentally appropriate practices
  • Ongoing assessment and evaluation
  • Responsive teaching and learning
  • Links to academic standards and ongoing assessment and evaluation

The VSA arts Institute design allows for individual and group learning with ample time provided for reflection. The schedule features plenary sessions, core sessions, a choice of small-group workshops, and facilitated study groups. An open art studio is provided, where participants can experience the art-making process and receive instruction in specific art-making techniques. Consultations with VSA arts Institute faculty are also available by appointment.
